Get Creative with Community Challenges
Keeping students engaged in their practice routine can be a challenge in itself. Whether you're looking for new ways to motivate your students or want to gamify their experience, Community Challenges in Practice Space are a fun and effective way to drive progress, accountability, and excitement.
With Community Challenges, teachers can set unique practice goals, track student progress, and even reward participation with gems or studio prizes. Let's dive into how they work and explore some creative ways to use them in your studio!
How Community Challenges Work
In Practice Space, you can create and tailor Community Challenges to fit the needs of your students. Here’s how:
✅ Name Your Challenge - Give your challenge a title for you and your students to refer to.
✅ Choose Your Challenge Type – The challenge type options are Practice Challenge, Video Challenge, or Custom Challenge. Practice challenges track the number of practice sessions a student logs, while video challenges track the number of practice videos submitted. For custom challenges, it’s up to you! You set the focus, whether it's a sight-reading challenge, a rhythm drill, or a performance-based task.
✅ Set a Start & End Date – Define the challenge duration to keep students accountable. You can also make it an ongoing challenge by not specifying an end date!
✅ Assign Rewards – Students can earn gems or custom studio prizes set by you, making participation even more exciting.
✅ Monitor Progress – Easily track student participation and engagement through the app. You can also make it a social challenge by allowing students to see each other’s progress and allowing updates to automatically post to your studio’s activity feed.
Now that you know the basics, let’s get creative with some challenge ideas!
Fun & Creative Challenge Ideas
1. The "Master a Measure" Challenge
Pick a difficult measure in their piece and challenge students to play it 10 times in a row over a few days. They can upload a final video of their best take to complete the challenge!
Why It Works: Small, focused goals help build discipline and mastery.
2. The Tempo Challenge
Challenge students to increase their metronome speed on a scale, arpeggio, or passage from the piece they’re working on. Track their tempo progress over the week through practice videos and see how far they can push it!
Collaborative Twist: Let them compete with classmates and celebrate top improvements.
3. The “Creative Composer” Challenge
Students write a short melody and share it with the studio! This could be based on a theme (e.g., "Springtime Sounds" or "Ocean Waves") or completely freeform.
Next Level: Have them perform each other’s compositions in their next lesson.
4. The Performance Challenge
Students must record a full performance of a piece with no stopping, just like a real recital! This builds confidence and gets them used to playing through mistakes.
Extra Fun: Create a studio “recital playlist” in your chat group where students can watch and encourage each other.
